I hope it doesn't turn out that the darkness is The Darkness, i.e. "I believe in a thing called love"... that would be an anticlimax.

Must say though, this season has been coming home very strongly - Moffat and Davies are definitely the A-team. And Catherine Tate *must* have quelled the naysayers by now - I think she's been superb.

I suspect the darkness will be the nothingness between everything, the before and after, the lack of light/space/time/meaning....

....perhaps I have watched too much Dr Who...

Blasphemy! You can never watch too much Doctor Who, Paul!

I accidently watched the first episode of Doctor Who (we're a little behind here as always) and it seemed interesting, different. A bit 80's style I'd say.

Nice blog!

I'd like to have a four-some with Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and that chick who played the Doctors Daughter that'd be fun...

They're all yours, Anonymous - me, I just want a couple of hours with Ianto Jones and his stopwatch...

OK so - I'm obsessed with Dr Who andthis final...I'm wondering if Donna has anything to do with the Master. Remember - she always wears that massive ring - and at the end of the last series, a woman picked up a ring from the Masters ashes. The sound of drums thing too....and Donna had been searching for the doctor so it wouldn't be suprising for her to have been there would it? or am I missing something?
Maybe she can put the ring on the doctors spare hand and the master will come back..
oh yes, how brilliant would that be?
No pics of John Simm in the media but it could be a well kept secret??

Your guess is as good as mine, anonymous. Me, I rather suspect that the very obvious shot of the Doctor's old hand bubbling away means we're going to end up with two doctors in the final episode, which should be rather fun. Of course, whether that's two David Tennants, or one David and a NEW Doctor, we'll just have to wait and see...

I've deleted the above comment by Jon, as its author's comments came across as crass, crude and more than just a touch homophobic. Jon, a word of advice: if you're going to criticise Russell T Davies for being gay, don't do it on the blog of a gay man, okay? Dickhead.

Urg... Look i apologize for insulting you, however i would like to point out that i didn't insult his sexuality i merely pointed out that he is fat, ugly and gay and even if many other people think he isn't ugly he is however both gay and could stand to lose a few pounds. these are facts and were not meant as slanderous homophobic words but either way again i am sorry.

please note that i also suggested Stephen Fry for doctor who who is also a homosexual.

But even though your probably just going to delete this again after reading anyway (that is if you do bother reading it and can tolerate raving homphobes like myself) i'm going to write a few points i'd like to make as to why i really don't like Russel T Davis

When i think of doctor who i think of a bunch of posh, borderline psychotic old men who cover up daleks eyestalks with their hat and/or scarves. Doctor Who used to be silly and brilliant, and at the same time being a bit scary aswell.
(even with all the silly polystyrene costumes)
But yes kudos to RTD for his astounding ability of taking all of that out and replacing it with horse manure.

Admittedly yes there have been some great episodes in the series but most of those are episodes that weren't written by him. take the library for instance. that was brilliant. But then one of the next episodes "Midnight" was a bunch of people shouting at eachother constantly. I'm surprised Barbara Windsor wasn't in it threatening ppl with her "famwee".

Then theres torchwood.........

Yeah captain jack is great ZOMG face of boe! fantastic along with the rest of the christopher eccleston series was fantastic. but then. when a shows second episode is an alien that takes on a host and shags people to death it can't mean very good things. It sounds like the story behind a bad porno.

oh dear went on a bit anyway yes i respect you for defending your sexuality but i wasn't attacking it. I have nothing against homosexuals two of my close friends are and another is TV (transvestite not television). all i'm saying is. Is that RTD can write a really good season finale (except for turning the doctor into smeagle from LOTR that was wrong) i'm just hoping he doesn't balls this up by having an army of evil alien tits and willys escape from the holding cells at torchwood.

Hi again Jon - and thank you for your more conciliatory comment.

Leaving Russell T Davies' weight and sexuality aside, there's a couple of points you make which I think are worth discussing.

You say that Doctor Who used to be scary, silly and brilliant. I think that it still is. One of the criticisms levelled at the new Who is that it's too silly (eg farting Slitheen) but it's a kids' show after all, and kids find fart jokes hugely funny. Australian author Andy Griffiths' success is indicative of that.

Obviously we disagree with what makes a good episode, as I thought 'Midnight' was a wonderfully tense yet simple and very effective episode; a classic locked room mystery given an SF twist. So what if it's "a bunch of people shouting at each other constantly"? I find angry, shouting people frightening in the extreme (it's one of the things that makes John Carpenter's The Thing still so effective), but perhaps you don't. Each to their own. :-)

As for your criticisms of Torchwood - yep, I agree that episode 1.2 was crap, but it wasn't written by RTD - the show's chief writer Chris Chibnall was responsible for that particular episode.

And while Torchwood season one was hit and miss, there were also been some absolute knockout eps - 'Ghost Machine' for instance, and 'Out of Time'; while season two has been both stronger and more consistent.

What it comes down to, I think, is that you just don't like RTD. That's cool. I do. Let's agree to disagree, shall we?
